The Blooming Plant

The growers of a rare flower, the giant but malodorous titan arum or "corpse flower," say a large plant that blossomed four years ago, bloomed again yesterday and may be on a record-setting pace for cultivated titan arums.
"It's going to be big," says Mohammad Fayyaz, the director of the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Botany Garden and Greenhouses. "Already, it is almost 6-feet tall."

Can men Float

Some of the rules for floating:
  • Avoid drinking coffee or black tea and eating for one hour before floating.
  • Shaving or depilating within three hours of floating is not recommended as the salt water could sting the skin.
  • Floating is not allowed on a day when you have your period or can reasonably expect it.
Again I ask, can men float too?

DIY Soup

For those who find cracking open a can of Campbell's Soup to be too easy a meal option, a Japanese company is offering a back-to-basics version: the vegetable seeds themselves.
The seeds come in a tin that looks exactly the same as the red-and-white Campbell's can except the word "soup" is replaced by "seeds". Inside is a choice of seeds to grow miniature tomatoes, miniature pumpkins or green peas.
The idea of a more labor-intensive Campbell's came to mind from an interior design magazine that showed the can immortalized by Andy Warhol being used to grow herbs in the kitchen.
"We would like customers to enjoy growing plants and making the dishes they like with vegetables, not necessarily just to make soup," said Machiko Endo, spokeswoman for the Tokyo-based World Flower Service....more...

Leonardo da Vinci Bridge Project

In 1502 Leonardo da Vinci did a simple drawing of a graceful bridge with a single span of 720-foot span. The bridge was to span the Golden Horn, an inlet at the mouth of the Bosphorus River in what is now Turkey. The Bridge was never built.
Norwegian painter and public art creator, Vebjørn Sand, saw the drawing and a model of the bridge in an exhibition on da Vinci's architectural & engineering designs in 1996. The power of the simple design overwhelmed him. He conceived of a project to bring its eternal beauty to life. The Norwegian Leonardo Bridge Project made history as the first of Leonardo's civil engineering designs to be constructed for public use.

Just a Coincidence

In Detroit sometime in the 1930s, a young (if incredibly careless) mother must have been eternally grateful to a man named Joseph Figlock. As Figlock was walking down the street, the mother's baby fell from a high window onto Figlock. The baby's fall was broken and both man and baby were unharmed. A stroke of luck on its own, but a year later, the very same baby fell from the very same window onto poor, unsuspecting Joseph Figlock as he was again passing beneath. And again, they both survived the event.
